When sound becomes music
I have been thinking about the difference between sound and music.
I am not sure where one ends and the other begins.
When I listen to the wind, I hear more than wind.
There are tones in it. Small changes in pitch.
Sometimes it rises, sometimes it falls away.
Rain has its own rhythm.
A passing bus has a tone.
A distant engine. A door closing.
The sound of something moving through the air.
None of these things were made to be music.
And yet, sometimes I listen to them in much the same way.
Perhaps music does not always begin with an instrument.
Perhaps it begins with listening.
I find myself drawn to sounds that may not sound like music to everyone.
Sounds that are rough, uneven, distant, or difficult to place.
Sometimes I enjoy creating something without knowing whether it should be called music at all.
It may be a sound.
It may become music.
Or perhaps the difference is not in the sound itself, but in the way we listen to it.
I do not think I need to decide.
I like that there is a space between the two.
A place where something can simply exist and still create a feeling.
Maybe that is enough.
Perhaps it is not always music I am trying to create.
Perhaps I am simply trying to make something worth listening to.
